As we approach the 2024 presidential election there are many hot button topics that the two main candidates are being asked to talk about. Donald J. Trump is running with JD Vance for the Republican ticket and Kamala Harris is running with Tim Walz for the Democratic ticket. Both Candidates have formed their own policies and views on the following five issues.
Here are 5 of the most talked about hot button topics and both candidate’s stances on each issue:
1.) Reproduction Rights
Reproduction rights include access to abortion, birth control, contraceptives, and in vitro fertilization (ivf). Trump is pro-life, meaning he is against federal access to abortions and believes it should be up to the states on if you can have access to the reproductive rights listed. Kamala is pro-choice, meaning she supports women to be able to make the choice for each reproductive right listed. Kamala is also fighting to have abortions be legal at the federal level.
2.) Gun Control
The 2nd Amendment supports citizen ownership of guns, although there is dispute over who can own a gun, what types of guns can be owned, and where people should keep or carry a gun. Gun control became a more popular topic as we have an increase of mass shootings in schools. Trump fully supports the 2nd Amendment and believes in less control and laws over gun ownership. Kamala wants more gun control laws to help lower gun violence, she plans to achieve this by red flag laws, universal background checks, and assault weapons ban.
3.) Supreme Court
It is expected that the next president will have the opportunity to appoint 2-3 Supreme Court Justices. The parties are interested in appointing justices as they can help swing the court towards the polices each party support. Democrats are also starting to propose term limits to the Supreme Court and getting rid of the life term the justices currently serve. President Biden recently attempted to pass a term limit bill, although it did not pass it did however bring the topic to the American people’s attention.
4.) Immigration
Immigration has been one of the most talked about issue for the upcoming election, especially when it comes to the southern border shared with Mexico. Trump is looking for more extensive border control laws including to increase deportation and make the process to immigrate to the United States more intense. Kamala is proposing for democrats to have a stricter policing of the southern border that is tougher on migrants
5.) Taxes
The debate on whether to raise taxes on the rich 1% has been catching the eye of the middle class as they wait and see if it will help inflation and the economy or not. Trump argues that he will not raise taxes for anyone but will instead lower taxes for everyone. Kamala wants to increase taxes on the rich 1% and lower taxes for the middle class in hopes to lower the massive inflation the country has been experiencing
